DO NOT MISS

Men’s triple jump
Phillips Idowu has a lot to live up to after Christine Ohuruogu’s 400m gold medal but the Londoner with flaming red hair has the character and charisma, as well as plenty of talent, to get Britain’s second athletics gold medal in Beijing.

His closest rivals are likely to be Portugal’s reigning World champion nelson Evora and Cuba’s impressive David Giralt.

However, Idowu looked impressive in qualifying, effortlessly topping leading the 12 men who will con test the final, is unbeaten this year and has the best mark of 2008.

Idowu also fired up after screwing up in Athens four years ago when he had three no-jumps in the final.

Men's 400m (13.55 BST)
This hasn’t been the best of years for Jeremy Wariner as the American sprinter has looked vulnerable for the first time since 2004. However, the Texan is still the defending World and Olympic champion over one lap of the track.

His compatriot LaShawn Merritt has to settle for the silver medal 12 months ago at the IAAF World Championships but has beaten Wariner twice this season, including at the US Olympic Trials.

Will it be a golden hat-trick of triumphs for the underdog Merritt or will Wariner follow in the footsteps of his mentor Michael Johnson and get back-to-back Olympic triumphs?

Martyn Rooney is also in the final and, with British athletes starting to get into gear, he could get a personal best and possibly take a surprise bronze medal.
